unusual animals

Vol.1 Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata)
The Japanese macaque has a hairless red face, calloused red rump and a short tail. Their dense gray body hair has two insulating layers that allow them to walk through the snow without suffering hypothermia. Their teeth are virtually the same as humans. They have very keen, three-dimensional sight and high-frequency hearing. Snow monkeys are highly intelligent, social animals and live in troops that range from 10 to 100 members. They communicate very effectively utilizing physical display, grooming, facial expressions and vocal sound. They are very active during the day and sleep in trees at night, embracing one another. The Japanese macaque diet is made up of many different plants, but they prefer new buds, young leaves and flowers (especially cherry blossoms), fruit, tree bark and seeds.

Vol.2 Maned Three-Toed Sloth (Bradypus Torquatus)
Also known as an Ai, the solitary Maned Three-Toed Sloth resides in the Atlantic coastal forests of Brazil. Its outer coat is host to algae, mites, ticks and moths, as well as two species of camouflaging bacteria. The bacteria also provide nutrients for the sloth when it licks its fur. Although it can swim and climb, on level ground it is unable to stand or walk, so it stays in the canopy of the forest. It eats, sleeps some 15 to 18 hours each day and even gives birth hanging from the limbs of trees.

Vol.3 Blue-Footed Boobie (Sula Nebouxii)
The Spaniards called them the clowns or bobos of the Galapagos because of their strange appearance, but the projectile-shaped body and stereoscopic vision of the Blue-Footed Booby enables them to make daring dives from up to 80 feet to capture fish in shallow waters. Even with their long pointed wings and a narrow bill, the most striking feature of this bird is its majestic and rich blue feet. The birds show off these beautiful feet with exaggerated steps during a courtship dance that includes the symbolic construction of an imaginary nest.

Το αγαπημένο μου από τα 5 ασυνήθιστα ζώα χάθηκε στο ταχυδρομείο. Τι ασυνήθιστο…

Vol.5 Yellow Seahorse (Hippocampus Kuda)
Commonly referred to as the Yellow Seahorse, this foot-long carnivore can appear as yellow, orange, brown and even black in color. Like a human fingerprint, seahorses have a small crown on their head that is distinct to each horse. Their chameleon-like eyes can move independently of each other as their long snouts suck up meals of small shrimp and plankton. During breeding seahorses often change color, swim side by side and dance by wheeling around unison. Their courtship dance lasts eight hours during which the male receives the female’s eggs into his pouch as they spiral and rise in the water. The male fertilizes and carries the eggs until they hatch in his pouch and newborns are prepared for life in the sea. In Hawaiian culture the Yellow Seahorse is the sign of eternal friendship.
